Vikings set at Receiver position

The Minnesota Vikings have completed their preseason with a perfect 4-0 record with victories over the Raiders, Cardinals, Chiefs and last night, the Tennessee Titans.  One thing is certain of this preseason…the Vikings are deep at the receiver position.

While it is certain that receiver Jerome Simpson has been suspended for the first three games of the season in response to a drunken driving arrest last November, the team still has Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson, Jarius Wright, Adam Thielen, Kain Colter and Rodney Smith.

Quarterback Position Cassel’s to lose

It would seem that the Christian Ponder era is pretty much over after three hardly inspiring season at the helm of the Vikings exemplified by last seasons nine games played highlighted by seven touchdowns to nine interceptions.

Over the summer, the organization drafted the 31st overall pick, Louisville arm Teddy Bridgewater and Cassel had a decent season in the nine games he played in completing 153 of 254 for 1,807 yards, 11 TD’s and nine touchdowns.  At 32, Cassell will be the bridge between the present and the future but rest assured, if he comes out stumbling, calls for Bridgewater to start will begin to howl in the North Star State!

Final Mini Camp opening up

As the off season comes to a close, Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer has called this mini-camp the most important of them all heading into Training Camp in July.  There are a number of issues the coaching staff will be keying but this camp will give an overall picture of where his team stands.  The following are some of the stand out issues:

  • Tight End Shuffle – The Vikings ran more two TE sets than any team last year.  With  TE John Carlson signing on with Arizona, Rhett Ellison and Chase Ford have an opportunity to shine this season.
  • Getting Anthony Barr situated at Outside Linebacker – Barr, the teams top 2014 draft selection just graduated from UCLA.
  • Safety in numbers? – After sitting out most of last season with injuries, Jamarca Sanford and Andrew Sendejo could lose their jobs to Kurt Coleman, Robert Blanton or Antone Exum.
  • Quarterback Controversy?  Not so says Coach Zimmer.  “I want to give everybody (Matt Cassel, Christian Ponder and Rookie Teddy Bridgewater) an opportunity and make sure that it’s a legitimate opportunity for all of them,” Zimmer said Tuesday after the Vikings opened their mandatory minicamp. “Then we’ll start narrowing down the reps as we get going. But it won’t be for a while.

Whatever the outcome, be sure to get your tickets and cheer on your Minnesota Vikings!
